The Early Hires
Helen Tanner is a healthcare leader who helps clinicians navigate startups, and helps startups build with clinicians. She was founding clinical leader of a venture-backed, multistate home-based primary care startup, building the clinical function from seed through Series B: validating the care model, building and scaling clinical teams, and leading clinical partnerships. The company was selected for the inaugural cohort of the CMS GUIDE Model. Along the way, she championed a real-time specialist consult platform that became a core tool for field providers once the company moved into value-based care. Today Helen is the founder and host of The Early Hires, the podcast and community for clinicians inside healthcare startups. She interviews clinical leaders who have built and scaled care at Iora Health, DispatchHealth, Curology, HealthBridge, and other early-stage healthcare startups, along with leaders from the University of Pittsburgh, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Pepperdine University. She also advises health tech companies on clinical strategy, clinician adoption, and go-tomarket, and works hands-on with AI tools across clinical practice and business, including OpenEvidence, Heidi, ChatGPT, and Claude. Her writing includes the Doximity Op-Med essay "I Joined a Healthcare Startup on Day One," and her work on women clinicians in startups is forthcoming in the International Journal of Academic Medicine. She continues to practice at an FQHC in Richmond, Virginia, and focuses her work on closing gaps in care and offering dignified healthcare to all. Follow her work at theearlyhires.com.
